One question that is asked frequently is how New gTLDs will perform in search engines. Will they be preferred or is it an impediment if your domain name contains a new gTLD? Before jumping to conclusions:

The predictions on how many new gTLD applications we will see this year have been increasing steadily. ICANN originally stated that it can process approximately 500 applications without any delay to the new gTLD program. Companies offering New gTLD services are expecting 1,000 - 1,500 application for the current application round and ICANN plans further application rounds for the future. As of 9 March 2012 and currently 16 days left for registration, 254 users have registered with ICANN with each user being able to apply for 50 TLDs. ...click for more
According to ICANN 207 TLD applicants have registered with the TLD Application System (TAS). Each registered applicant may file up to 50 gTLD applications. 29 March 2012 is the last day to register with TAS and 12 April is the last day to submit a gTLD application. On 1 May ICANN is going to publish a list of the applications and who has applied for which character strings (TLDs). ICANN calls it "reveal day". ...click for more
Today, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) finally opens the application period for its long-awaited new gTLD program.
Prospective new gTLD applicants have just less than three months from now on to submit their proposals to the organization for consideration.
Mark Your Calendars:
- 12 January 2012: Application period opens
- 29 March 2012: Last day to register for access to the TLD Application System (TAS)
- 12 April 2012: Application period closes
