With the introduction of new gTLDs ICANN has created additional protection mechanisms for rights holders, especially trademark owners. Whereas existing rights protection mechanisms (RPM) such as the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (UDRP) apply to old and new gTLDs alike, new gTLDs will feature unique RPMs such as the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH). ICANN Targets to Reopen TAS on 22 May

Today ICANN announced that it is targeting 22 May 2012 to reopen TAS for five business days, closing on 30 May. Although ICANN finally releases a specific date this may still be subject to change as ICANN is only „targeting“ and „intending“ to reopen TAS. ICANN furthermore uncovered a new set of data in their packet-level research that may have an impact on the parties that were affected by the TAS glitch. ICANN Offers Full Refund to gTLD Applicants

In today’s press release ICANN is offering all applicants a full refund for withdrawing a gTLD application. The current Applicant Guidebook provides a refund schedule in Section 1.5.1 starting with 80% or USD $ 148,000. The refund based on yesterday’s board resolution covers the full USD $185,000 including the USD $5,000 TAS application fee which is part of ICANN’s gTLD Evaluation Fee. In the last few weeks of the TAS shutdown ICANN hasn’t given away much information on the new gTLD program although finally the number of gTLD has been revealed. The current facts are:

- 2,091 new gTLD applications
- 1,268 applicants
- 214 unpaid applications
- USD $350 million application fees received
- no TAS reopening date (yet)
- no Reveal Day schedule
