The initiative to realize a .scot TLD would certainly benefit many individuals and groups both inside as well as outside of Scotland. The millions of people worldwide that are connected to Scottish heritage will be further bound by the establishment of a .scot top-level domain.

Currently, most Scottish individuals and organisations use .com or .co.uk domain names for their websites and email. The .scot campaign is aiming toward the introduction of a new top-level domain, namely .scot, to give Scots worldwide a unique identity online. A domain name with a .scot ending emphasizes an awareness of Scottish culture and language. Any group, anywhere in the world, that promotes the culture and language of Scotland as its primary purpose, will have the right to use a .scot domain.

A .scot top-level domain could be used by a variety of individuals and groups. For instance:

  • Scottish People. All people that consider themselves Scottish, whether residing in Scotland at present or not. These people are clearly at the core of the community and are the life blood of the culture of Scotland.
  • Residents of Scotland. People who have moved to Scotland and now consider it their home. Those living in Scotland who were born elsewhere are also part of the community and will be allowed to make use of the .scot domain name.
  • Speakers of Gaelic and Scots Language. Having a .scot community will provide a place on the Internet where Scottish languages and culture can flourish. This was clearly observed by the Catalan community following the introduction of the .cat domain name.
  • Scottish groups abroad. The .scot domain can be utilised by Scottish communities that exist around the world, enhancing their ability to pass on the heritage and culture of the Scottish nation.
  • Scottish charities. Charities based in Scotland will have the opportunity to emphasise their Scottish base.
  • Scottish businesses and trade associations. Businesses and trade associations based in Scotland will be able to distinguish themselves as being supportive of the Scottish community.
  • Scottish government, councils and public bodies. As representative bodies, Scots view these groups as having a clear desire and need to make use of a .scot domain in their representation of the people of Scotland.
